Both sit at the center of the memory market, building the chips that power today’s AI revolution. Memory demand has exploded over the past year, and stock prices reflect it, with both up 300% YoY 📈

Which of the two stands out as the stronger, higher-quality business? 🏆

Micron and SK hynix are two dominant players in the global memory industry. Samsung is the third key player.

Micron is an American company, founded in 1978, and has long focused on both DRAM and NAND. It sells memory chips to a wide range of markets, from PCs and smartphones to data centers and cars. Micron designs and produces its own chips and has recently increased its focus on High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), the type of memory used in AI servers. A meaningful part of its revenue still comes from more traditional memory markets.

SK hynix is a South Korean company, founded in 1983, and runs a very similar business. The key difference today is its stronger position in advanced HBM. SK hynix supplies a large share of the latest HBM chips used in AI accelerators, making it an important supplier in the AI build-out. Like Micron, it also sells DRAM and NAND to a broad range of end markets.
