📰 Baidu Expands Autonomous Driving to Hong Kong
Baidu’s Apollo Go receives first license to test robotaxis outside mainland China.
Baidu BIDU 0.00%↑ has secured a significant milestone, obtaining approval to test its Apollo Go autonomous vehicles in Hong Kong. This marks the company's first such license beyond mainland China, granted by Hong Kong's Transport Department.
Starting December 9, 2024, Apollo Go will trial one vehicle at a time on designated roads in North Lantau, with a backup operator on board for safety. The license remains valid until December 2029. This move follows Hong Kong’s updated legislation supporting wider autonomous vehicle trials.
Apollo Go already operates extensively in China, with over 400 vehicles in cities like Wuhan. Baidu aims to expand robotaxi services globally, including to Singapore and the Middle East. This step positions Baidu as a key player in the race to commercialize autonomous driving technology.
