📰 Chipotle Goes Back to Its Roots with First Mexico Location
The popular burrito chain is finally making its move into Mexico, with bigger plans for Latin America on the horizon.
After years of success in the U.S., Chipotle CMG 0.00%↑ is getting ready to go big internationally. In early 2026, the company will open its very first restaurant in Mexico, teaming up with Alsea, the group behind brands like Starbucks, Domino’s, and Burger King across Latin America and Europe. It’s a big moment for Chipotle, which until recently focused almost only on the U.S. Now, with more than 3,700 restaurants worldwide and growing in places like Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Kuwait, and the UAE, Chipotle is reaching for more.
Can Chipotle conquer Mexico?
Expanding into Mexico means a lot. Chipotle’s menu is based on Mexican flavors, and the company believes its focus on fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients will connect with local customers. But success isn’t guaranteed, Taco Bell famously failed twice in Mexico. Authenticity is key, and Chipotle hopes that its focus on quality will make the difference.
The timing also adds a challenge. Tensions between the U.S. and Mexico are rising again because of a new trade war under President Trump. This has even affected Mexican avocados, a key ingredient for Chipotle. Even though the company has worked to diversify its suppliers, about half of its avocados still come from Mexico.
On the financial side, Chipotle is strong. The company’s steady growth, solid profit margins, and healthy cash flow give it the resources to keep expanding. Beyond Mexico, Chipotle plans to open hundreds of new restaurants across North America, aiming to grow to 7,000 locations.
Chipotle’s move into Mexico isn’t just another restaurant opening, it’s a big test of how far the brand can go. If they can win over customers in the heartland of Mexican food, the future could be very bright.
