📰 Intuitive Expands Reach in Southern Europe
The company plans direct operations in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and San Marino to grow its robotic surgery presence.
Intuitive ISRG 0.00%↑ is taking a big step forward in Europe. The company announced it will directly manage its business in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and San Marino by 2026. This move involves acquiring the distribution operations from its current partners, ab medica, Abex, and Excelencia Robotica.
This transition is part of Intuitive’s effort to bring robotic-assisted surgery to more patients in Southern Europe. By taking direct control of operations, the company aims to strengthen relationships with hospitals, doctors, and other healthcare providers. Intuitive’s CEO, Gary Guthart, emphasized the importance of understanding the unique needs of each market. “A direct presence helps us better serve customers and expand access to minimally invasive care,” he said.
Once the deal closes, Intuitive will fully integrate the local distribution teams into its European operations. Dirk Barten, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intuitive Europe, highlighted the importance of this move. “Our distributors have done a fantastic job over the years,” he said. “Now, we’re excited to work even more closely with healthcare professionals in these countries.”
Italy has been a key market for Intuitive, with robotic surgery first introduced there over 20 years ago. Francesca Cerruti, CEO of ab medica, reflected on this history, saying, “We are proud to have helped bring this innovation to Southern Europe. We will continue to support healthcare professionals and patients through this transition.”
The deal is still subject to regulatory approvals, but Intuitive expects it to strengthen its position in the region. The company believes a direct approach will allow for faster adoption of robotic systems like the da Vinci and Ion, improved customer service, and better training programs.
This strategic move also aligns with the growing demand for robotic surgery across Europe, as hospitals look for ways to improve surgical outcomes and efficiency. For Intuitive, expanding its reach in Southern Europe is a major milestone in its mission to make minimally invasive care accessible to more people.
