𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 I started investing when I got my first job out of college with Vanguard. Looking back, I was fortunate that such a high-character company took a chance on a history major with no business or investments background. From there, I worked my way toward a research focus, eventually becoming an analyst with The Motley Fool in 2006. I moved into the institutional research side of the business with Morningstar in 2011 and then went onto two buyside roles from 2015 to 2023. I'm currently managing my personal capital, publishing the Flyover Stocks newsletter, and teaching finance at the University of Dayton where I also serve as the advisor of a student-run fund.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆?
I invest in quality companies with economic moats led by thoughtful stewards of shareholder capital, and buy them at a reasonable price. And then, be patient...

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼?
I usually maintain a portfolio ranging from 15 to 20 stocks.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻?
I primarily focus on consumer, industrials, and financial sectors, with a specific emphasis on insurance.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀?
I consider conviction to be a function of the company's underlying quality and my level of understanding/confidence of that quality. Valuation is a separate consideration. By that definition, my highest conviction names are:
$COST - Costco
$NTDOY - Nintendo
$BRKB - Berkshire Hathaway

$KNSL - Kinsale Capital currently has the highest return in my portfolio.

$PTON - Peloton. Long story, but I learned many lessons from this one.
