In this edition, we have the pleasure of interviewing:
Name: Travis Hoium @TravisHoium
Age: 43
Residence/Country: USA
Invests since: 1995
Introduction
I got started investing early. I saved money from collecting cans and mowing lawns and bought my first stock when I was 13 years old. That stock (Medtronic - $MDT) helped me pay for college, where I earned an engineering degree and worked at 3M for seven years. But eventually, investing drew me back in, and I got an MBA in 2010. I’ve been writing about the market publicly ever since.
What is your investment strategy?
Asymmetric Investing leans into the advantages we have over the market. As individual investors, we can take a long-term view, embrace more risk, focus on true compounders, and lean into the uncertainty that Wall Street hates. Using those advantages to find stocks with 10x potential over the next decade is at the core of how I invest — and central to the buy-and-hold strategy that has proven so successful.
How many stocks are currently held in your portfolio?
Today, the Asymmetric Portfolio has 23 stocks.
Which sectors do you mainly focus on?
I’m looking for industries with unlimited potential and clear long-term strategic advantages — such as network effects and aggregation dynamics. That generally leads me to technology, but I also own stocks in consumer goods, healthcare, transportation, and aviation. In the end, I follow the opportunities wherever they arise.
What are your 3 highest conviction stocks?
$HIMS- Hims & Hers
$LYFT - Lyft
$MGM - MGM Resorts
What is the stock in your portfolio with the highest return?
$HOOD - Robinhood is up 665% in the portfolio.
What is the biggest investing mistake you have made?
Selling. It’s always selling. I sold $CMG Chipotle in 2008. I sold $AAPL Apple in 2010. I sold $MSFT Microsoft in 2016.
If you could give one piece of advice to investors, what would it be?
Never stop learning — and don’t be afraid to steal great ideas from smart people.
