📰 Nvidia and MediaTek Take On Intel and AMD in Desktop Chips
New partnership signals Nvidia’s move into the PC market.
Nvidia NVDA 0.00%↑ has teamed up with MediaTek to develop a powerful new desktop CPU, a move that could shake up the PC market. Announced at CES 2025, their joint project—codenamed Project DIGITS—combines Nvidia's AI expertise with MediaTek's energy-efficient chip technology.
Project DIGITS features a high-performance CPU and Nvidia’s Blackwell AI chip, packaged into a compact computer designed for developers. Running on a Linux-based operating system, this machine is ideal for AI researchers and engineers looking for top-notch computing power.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang hinted that this partnership with MediaTek is just the beginning. While DIGITS targets developers, Nvidia’s long-term goal could include creating chips for everyday PCs. “We’ve designed a high-performance CPU with MediaTek,” Huang said. “It’s a win-win.”
This collaboration positions Nvidia as a serious competitor to Intel and AMD in the desktop chip market. With Intel holding 62% of the market and AMD at 35.5%, Nvidia’s entry could disrupt the status quo.
For now, Project DIGITS is set to launch in May 2025, starting at $3,000. It’s a bold step for Nvidia, which has already dominated AI chips. If the company’s track record is any indication, it might soon be a major player in consumer PCs as well.
