📰 Tesla in Talks With Austin Over Autonomous Vehicle Safety
Company plans unsupervised driver-assistance rollout in Texas and California next year.
Tesla TSLA 0.00%↑ is currently in discussions with the city of Austin regarding its autonomous vehicle technology. These talks, which began in May, focus on establishing safety guidelines for Tesla's self-driving vehicles as part of the company's broader plans for the future of transportation. A Tesla employee has been working with the city’s autonomous vehicle task force to set clear expectations for the safety and operation of Tesla’s vehicles in the region.
The discussions come as Tesla prepares to roll out an unsupervised version of its driver-assistance technology in Texas and California next year. This system will expand beyond Tesla's existing Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, which still requires driver supervision. The new system aims to reduce the need for human intervention during driving.
Texas, with its relatively relaxed regulatory environment, presents an ideal testing ground for autonomous vehicles. There are few restrictions on self-driving cars in the state, and local regulations explicitly prohibit cities from regulating driverless vehicles. This regulatory freedom has allowed Tesla to push forward with its autonomous vehicle ambitions, and Austin could become a key part of its strategy to bring autonomous vehicles to market.
