📰 Trump Confirms Microsoft in Talks to Buy TikTok
Donald Trump suggests Microsoft is back in talks to acquire TikTok as national security concerns resurface. Could this finally be the deal that reshapes the app’s future?
Donald Trump has shared that Microsoft MSFT 0.00%↑ is once again in talks to buy TikTok. The popular app, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has been at the center of U.S. national security concerns for years. Trump mentioned he’d like to see a bidding war for TikTok, which has about 170 million users in the U.S.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has tried to acquire TikTok. Back in 2020, when Trump was president, there were similar talks. At the time, the government pressured ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations, but the deal never went through. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, later called the experience “the strangest thing I’ve ever worked on.”
Now, the situation is heating up again. A new law requires ByteDance to sell TikTok’s U.S. branch or face a complete ban. The app was even briefly taken offline earlier this month because of the growing tension. Trump has signed an order to delay enforcement of the law by 75 days, giving potential buyers more time.
While Microsoft seems to be the main contender, Trump has also floated the idea of Elon Musk buying the app, though Musk hasn’t made any public comments about it. Meanwhile, an AI startup, Perplexity AI, has proposed merging with TikTok and offering the U.S. government a stake in the new company.
For now, TikTok’s future remains uncertain. Whether Microsoft seals the deal or another player steps in, it’s clear the U.S. government’s concerns about the app aren’t going away anytime soon.
