📰 TSMC's Kaohsiung 2nm Fab Ahead of Schedule by 6 Months
Early equipment installation positions TSMC’s Kaohsiung fab to lead next-generation 2nm chip production in 2025.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company TSM 0.00%↑ has reached a key milestone with the installation of equipment at its new 2nm fab in Kaohsiung. This facility, TSMC’s first 12-inch fab in the city, is set to begin mass production in 2025 and play a pivotal role in the future of semiconductor technology.
Notably, the Kaohsiung fab's equipment installation has surpassed expectations, arriving more than six months ahead of schedule. Once operational, it will produce some of the world’s most advanced semiconductors, reinforcing TSMC’s leadership in the industry.
The Kaohsiung 2nm fab is part of TSMC’s dual approach to 2nm production in Taiwan, alongside a second plant in Hsinchu Baoshan, which began installation earlier in 2024. Both are slated for mass production in 2025, marking the launch of TSMC’s next-generation technology.
Originally designed for more mature processes, the Kaohsiung fab was repurposed for 2nm production after a strategic shift in August 2023. This acceleration in installation highlights TSMC’s confidence in the future of 2nm chips, which are expected to surpass demand for 3nm technology. Chairman C.C. Wei has noted a significant increase in customer inquiries for 2nm chips, driven by growing demand for smaller, more efficient semiconductors.
Once operational, the Kaohsiung fab will become the most advanced production site in southern Taiwan, surpassing TSMC’s current 3nm operations in Tainan. Given the strong market interest, TSMC may also expand production capacity in Tainan to support the 2nm line, ensuring its leadership in next-gen chip manufacturing.
As TSMC prepares to supply the world’s most advanced chips, its Kaohsiung and Hsinchu facilities are poised to redefine the semiconductor industry.
