📰 Uber and WeRide Launch Largest Robotaxi Service Outside U.S. and China
The autonomous vehicles debut on Uber platform in Abu Dhabi.
Uber UBER 0.00%↑ and WeRide have partnered to launch autonomous ride-hailing services in Abu Dhabi, marking the first time Uber integrates autonomous vehicles (AVs) outside the U.S. and the largest commercial robotaxi deployment beyond the U.S. and China.
Starting today, Uber riders in Abu Dhabi requesting UberX or Uber Comfort can be matched with WeRide’s AVs for trips in key areas such as Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Abu Dhabi International Airport. Tawasul Transport will manage the fleet, supported by the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre.
To ensure safety, a human operator will initially be present in each AV, with plans for a fully driverless service by 2025. Noah Zych, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility, expressed excitement about integrating AVs into everyday life, while WeRide highlighted its safety-first approach, backed by years of operational experience. This launch signals a significant milestone in advancing autonomous mobility globally.
