📰 Waymo to Launch Robotaxi Testing in Tokyo by 2025
Alphabet's autonomous vehicles will begin testing in Japan, marking a significant expansion of Waymo's global operations.
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle division of Alphabet GOOGL 0.00%↑, is preparing to introduce its robotaxis to Tokyo in early 2025. This will be the first time Waymo's technology has been tested on public roads outside of the United States. The move is part of Waymo's "road trips" program, designed to bring its self-driving technology to diverse urban environments with distinct challenges. In Tokyo, Waymo will face unique hurdles, such as left-hand driving and navigating through a densely packed city.
Previously, Waymo had focused its testing efforts on a number of U.S. cities, including Miami and Death Valley, to simulate different weather conditions. For the Tokyo trial, Waymo has partnered with taxi-hailing app GO and taxi company Nihon Kotsu. Nihon Kotsu will manage the vehicles, with its drivers initially mapping key areas of Tokyo, including Minato and Shibuya. Over time, Waymo plans to transition to fully autonomous driving in the region.
This announcement follows GM’s recent decision to scrap its own robotaxi program in Japan, highlighting the growing competition in the race to establish autonomous ride-hailing services globally.
