Altria Group and Philip Morris International are two of the most recognized names in the global tobacco industry. For many years, they were part of the same company, but have been operating separately since they split in 2008.
Altria Group, based in the United States, owns the rights to Marlboro in the U.S. and focuses mainly on the American market. The company has also invested in other areas like alcohol (with a stake in AB InBev), cannabis (via Cronos Group), and smokeless nicotine products.
Philip Morris International owns Marlboro outside the U.S. and sells its products around the world. Since the split, Philip Morris has focused on moving away from cigarettes and leading the transition to smoke-free products, especially with its heated tobacco device, IQOS, which is gaining popularity in many countries.
