Astera Labs and Marvell Technologies both power the future of AI and data — but in different ways.

Astera Labs was founded in Silicon Valley in 2017 to solve a growing challenge: moving data quickly and efficiently between chips in AI hardware. Its products help connect CPUs, GPUs and memory using advanced technologies like CXL and PCIe — making sure data gets where it needs to go, with minimal delay. Astera’s chips are already being used by major cloud providers and AI hardware makers, including Microsoft Azure, Nvidia, and Intel. The company went public on Nasdaq in 2024 and continues to grow fast as AI demand surges.

Marvell Technologies is a more established player. It was founded in 1995 and started in storage chips, but today it’s known for custom silicon, networking, and data center infrastructure. Under CEO Matt Murphy, Marvell shifted its focus to cloud and AI. It now works with some of the biggest tech companies in the world, supplying custom chips and high-speed networking gear for AI workloads at scale.

Astera is a focused specialist in high-speed connectivity and memory access inside AI systems, while Marvell offers a broader range of solutions — from custom chips to networking — that power full data centers, backed by deep industry partnerships.

Both are betting big on the future of AI, but from very different positions. Marvell is the more experienced giant, while Astera is a smaller challenger that’s growing fast.
